Nestled at the foothills of the sacred Arunachala mountain, the Ramana Maharshi Centre in Tiruvannamalai is a beacon for sincere seekers of truth and silence. This is the place where Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, one of India’s greatest sages, lived and guided souls from across the globe into the path of Self-enquiry (Atma Vichara).

Ramana never preached religion. He simply showed that Truth lies within, and that stillness is the highest form of teaching.

About Sri Ramana Maharshi

Born in 1879, young Venkataraman experienced a profound awakening at the age of 16. He left home and came to Arunachala, the sacred hill he would never leave again. Taking on the name Ramana, he spent decades in deep silence, answering seekers not through lectures but through presence, compassion, and a gaze that pierced illusion.
His primary teaching was simple, direct, and powerful:
“Ask yourself: Who am I?”

Key Sanctums at the Ramana Ashram

Samadhi Shrine – The sacred resting place of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi. Devotees sit in deep meditation, soaking in the silence and energy.
Old Meditation Hall – Known for its intense vibrations, this is where Ramana sat in silence for hours. Seekers often report inner transformation here.
Mother’s Shrine – Built over the Samadhi of Ramana’s mother, Alagammal, whom he spiritually liberated.

Arunachala – The Mountain of Light

More than a backdrop, Arunachala is the living heart of this centre. Ramana declared that the mountain itself is Shiva in form, and that simply being in its presence can bring liberation.

Many devotees perform Giri Pradakshina—a sacred 14-km walk around the mountain—as a form of meditation and surrender.
